If I type keywords in either the search box or in the "simple" search form and decide last second that I need more options, retain the keywords and automatically fill it in when the advanced search form appears.

That would be nice, but then again someone may decide to use different words.

Then automatically highlight the keywords and put focus on that field, so if they did want to change it they could type immediately without clicking to overwrite the old keywords.

Ya like VB has that would be really nice.

i would like a feature of when searching that it grabs terms from the search cache and displays those if they match yours so you can then choose one of those terms saving the need to run entirely new search which return similar results.
